The beautiful city of Wells, Somerset

Did we mention we are now operating in Wells? 😃 Here is a quick read on the history and why we love this beautiful city in the heart of Somerset.

At the heart of the city is the Cathedral, once named as the No 1 Cathedral in England, and houses the worlds oldest working clock along with its famous West front and the Cathedral Green. The breathtaking scissor arches, a feat of engineering, were constructed from 1338-48 as a solution to a very real problem. Several large cracks began to appear in the tower structure and fearing collapse, the famous scissors arches were created. In 1465 Bishop Beckington bestowed upon the city the gift
of fresh spring water for all, which to this day is visible still running through the streets.

From the top of the Market Place you can walk through the Bishops Eye and enter The Bishops Palace and Gardens which has been the heart of Wells for over 800 years set within 14 acres of RHS gardens is open for all to enjoy. Surrounded by the magnificent moat, across a flagstone drawbridge, walk under the portcullis and experience a true
hidden gem in the heart of this fabulous city.

Historic Wells may be the smallest City in England but it has a lot to offer. From jaw dropping architecture to a wide range of independent shops, bars and cafes as well as its award winning (twice weekly) outdoor market.

On a sunny day sitting in the Market Place you might be forgiven for thinking that you were in a French town, with café tables set out on cobbles and even an annual boules competition. Wells is big enough to have all the amenities needed, either in the City or close by, and yet small enough to exchange a hello with a passing stranger on your stroll around the palace moat, added to which within a few minutes walk of the charming centre you be in open countryside to absorb all the best
bits of Somerset.
