Somerset this Autumn
Not much get's past our Wells team about what's happening in Somerset.....
Root
We’re excited to read that Root is bringing its small plate vegetarian restaurant from Bristol to Wells! Head Chef Rob Howell was born and raised here. Along with his wife and restaurant manager Meg, they will take over the former Ensemble site in Sadler Street. It's Root's first restaurant outside Bristol and we can't wait to try it.
GAIA
We're very excited that the travelling artwork, Gaia, (pictured below at St. Wulfram's Church, Grantham), is taking up residence Wells Cathedral until 10th November. Don't miss this chance to see this 3D installation of the earth, created by artist Luke Jerram Studio using NASA imagery. Alongside this is the cathedral's "Stewards of the Earth" initiative, which will be highlighting our impact on the planet and how we can do better, through a series of talks and information boards by local charities such as the the Somerset Wildlife Trust.
Somerset’s carnivals
A must see should you find yourself in the area in November. One of the most spectacular illuminated shows in the world. During the cold, dark evenings of November, dozens of huge illuminated floats, packed with costumed dancers, thousands of lightbulbs and hundreds of technical moving parts entertain tens of thousands of spectators who line the streets of several Somerset towns.
All donations go to help support local charities.
Shepton Mallet Carnival - Wednesday 16th November from 7.30pm
Wells Carnival - Friday 18th November from 7pm
Glastonbury Carnival - Saturday 19th November from 6pm
Spooky Tours
Shepton Mallet Prison
Found in the town of Shepton Mallet, the infamous prison is reputedly the most haunted jail in the world. Take a ghost tour guided by torchlight as you will delve into the ghostly world of spirits – experience the strange silence that fills the grounds and the damp walls carrying only the faintest echo of what’s left behind.
Walks
Tyntesfield, Wraxall
A Victorian Gothic Revival house surrounded by the spectacular grounds full of rare trees turning various amazing shades of reds and golds. There are four circular Golden Trees walks which will give a great tour of the estate’s Autumn colour.
Stourhead Gardens
The world famous landscape garden at Stourhead just a short drive from Frome with its lake, classical temples, grottoes and rare trees, is a must for this time of year. In just around an hour you can take a footpath giving you time to enjoy the follies and numerous photo opportunities. Alternatively you can take a walk through the woods up to the 160ft King Alfred’s Tower, with spectacular views from the top.
